How Connect works

Connect lets you message users across various mediums, including email, SMS, web, and mobile push. The flexibility is great, but it takes a good amount of work to get things up and running when you need data from web, iOS, and Android combined. The web implementation is a Javascript library that you’ll need to configure and hook into for data about who your users are and what they’re doing on your site. On the mobile side you’ll need to bundle the Connect SDKs for iOS and Android and configure things so you can collect the push token. You’ll also need to record user traits and actions with the Connect API by adding hooks into your iOS and Android app code.

There are several advantages to installing Connect through its Segment integration. On the web side you’ll be up and running quickly since Segment will load the Javascript library and pass through to Connect the customer data you’re already collecting with Segment (who your users are and what they’re doing on your site). For mobile app installations, Segment saves you even more time. You don’t need to bundle any additional SDKs or add code hooks into your apps as you would with a native installation. All you need to do is enable the Connect integration and everything happens on the Segment server. Your existing Segment events and user data gets tracked, sent to the Segment server, then translated into Connect format and sent directly. That data includes the push token you’ll need to send push notifications to users.
