Send in-app notifications based on topics of interest with Appcues

If you’ve ever created a feature that only applies to a subset of users (e.g. a WYSIWYG editor for marketers) you know it’s challenging to notify that group without broadcasting to everyone else in your app. However, with Segment and Appcues you can.

With Segment, you can track user activity across your site and/or app and build custom audiences based on the topics users have expressed interest in. From there, you can sync that audience to Appcues via Segment Personas and send targeted in-app notifications.

How this works:
  1. Build a custom audience in Segment Personas that ties together meaningful events (e.g. Page Viewed or Email Clicked or Content Downloaded) with topical properties (page URL contains “marketing” or “personalization”).
  2. Save that audience with a name that is easy to understand (e.g. visitors_interested_in_personalization_feature using the example above)
  3. Select Appcues as a destination to send that audience to via Segment Personas
  4. Configure audience triggers from Appcues for users with your new computed trait
Steps to get started:
  1. Set up event tracking via Segment
  2. Connect Segment to Appcues
  3. Use Segment Personas to build custom audiences and send to Appcues

How Appcues works with Segment

Turning Appcues on via its Segment integration will save you many developer hours and time spent writing duplicative event tracking code. Once you’ve gone through even a basic Sement website implementation, turning on Appcues in your Segment dashboard will immediately make all its features available to you.
