How Olark works

Olark is powered by a Javascript library that needs to be loaded on any pages where you want to chat with visitors. You can control where on the page the chat window pops up in the Olark application itself. In order to surface user attributes when operators are chatting with a customer, however, custom code is required. Triggering custom events to let operators know what people are doing on the site as they chat also requires hooking into the Olark Javascript API. If you want to record Olark events in your analytics tool or data warehouse, more custom code is required. That code will hook into the Olark on-page Javascript events or pull the raw data from the export API.

Segment will load the Olark Javascript library in the background so you don’t have to add the snippet to your site, saving you installation time and improving web performance. Any user traits you’re setting with the Segment identify  method will be passed through to Olark without any additional code required from your side. Customer data you’re tracking in Segment will show up to operators as they chat so they’ve always got the most up to date actions of the person they’re chatting with readily available. The integration will collect a standard set of live chat events (Live Chat Started, Message Sent/Received) as they happen and send them back through Segment to be delivered to other Segment integrations and warehouses, an added bonus of turning on Olark with Segment.
