How Parse.ly works

Parse.ly runs on code that collects data directly in your application. For a direct implementation, Parse.ly recommends the installation of the Parse.ly Tracker, a small piece of JavaScript code that monitors user actions performed on your site and relays them to the Parse.ly analytics server. You will need to insert the Parse.ly Tracker into the footer of your website template, and modify the code to use your API key. There are some rules for optimal placement of the code that Parse.ly provides. The specifics of installation will depend on the particulars of your development environment, and so will take effort from your development team before you can begin collecting data.

Get more out of Parse.ly with Segment

If you are already using Segment, getting started with Parse.ly becomes very simple and only requires you to configure settings within the Segment user interface. This is because your existing Segment code implementation can collect the same client-side information that Parse.ly needs to collect.

When you enable Parse.ly in your Segment settings, Segment’s content delivery network is updated within 5-10 minutes. Once that happens, Segment will know to load parsely.js from Parse.ly onto your page whenever it is loaded. This means there is no need to manually install any Parse.ly code into your web application. Parse.ly will start automatically tracking data using your existing Segment implementation.

Lastly, when you use Segment to send data to Parse.ly, you gain assurances that your customer data will be the same as that sent to your other tools, such as those used for email automation, chat, push, ad conversions, etc. There are also many cases where you’ll get convenient access to additional data in Parse.ly that wouldn’t be there without custom coding in a direct Parse.ly implementation.
