  • Allows publishers to filter audiences based on constraints like user location, referral source, and visitor type

Chartbeat

How Chartbeat works

The basic implementation of Chartbeat requires the Chartbeat Javascript library to be installed on all your pages, such that it is loaded each time you have a visitor. A “heartbeat” is triggered by the Chartbeat library when visitors are reading your content, so the system knows how long people spend on each page. Chartbeat becomes much more useful when you send detailed data about your content, like the author’s name, article categories, and other custom metadata. Sending a high level of detailed data, however, requires custom code and an understanding of the Chartbeat Javascript library.

Get more out of Chartbeat with Segment

When you enable Chartbeat in Segment, the Chartbeat script will be added to your site automatically and without any need for manual code changes. The Segment page method triggers a virtual page view in Chartbeat, including important page details automatically. This is especially important if you are tracking a single page app, since there’s no page reload when people are shown a new page.

If you’re recording page metadata like name, category, author, and other custom properties, that data can be passed from Segment directly to Chartbeat. You’ll see the information populated in Chartbeat as section, page name, author, and page properties.
