How Firebase Works

Like other mobile analytics tools, to use Firebase Analytics you’ll need to map out the events and user traits that you want to collect, decide which libraries and SDKs you need to collect that data, and install for your iOS and Android apps. Once the SDKs are installed, there are a few methods that you’ll need to learn that detail how Firebase expects user and event data to be sent from your app. Each user property, event, and event property needs to be custom coded into your apps in order for Firebase to have access to the data it needs. To use the eCommerce features in Firebase, you will need to learn the semantics and map the data for a number of specific events and event properties that correspond to shopping and checkout activities. Data accuracy is essential for an analytics tool like Firebase, so it’s important that a mobile developer leads the implementation process.

Get More out of Firebase with Segment

The Firebase Analytics SDK is implemented via your Segment SDK, which only takes a few extra lines of code. Once the SDK is installed for iOS and Android, Segment maps the data it’s already processing through to Firebase without any additional code or configuration. Traits included in Identify calls map to setUserId and Firebase user properties. All the events you’re already tracking to Segment will be automatically mapped to Firebase events. Even the standard set of Firebase events will be received when Firebase is added to your Segment SDK. In addition to custom track events and the standard set of Firebase events, many of the Segment eCommerce Spec events and properties (e.g., product added to cart, value, SKU etc.) are mapped to Firebase special events and properties. Firebase is the preferred method to record Adwords conversions, and that’s fully supported with Firebase via Segment as well.
