How Leanplum works

Leanplum is usually powered by a mobile SDK that needs to be bundled into your app and configured properly in order to collect the data you need. That means you need to learn the methods and data schema that Leanplum expects and install code hooks into your app code to fire events whenever anything important happens. To get the most out of Leanplum, you’ll also need to record user attributes. That means building an ETL pipeline or other upload process to pull the data from your database and populate it into the proper format for Leanplum to understand the data and put it to good use. There’s a lot of out of the box functionality in Leanplum, like some of its in-app messaging, but most of the more robust features require some custom written code or additional customer data to be sent through.

Get more out of Leanplum with Segment

When you enable the Leanplum integration in Segment, your customer data gets forwarded automatically. All the data in identify and track methods that you’re already sending to Segment gets shared with Leanplum in the format Leanplum expects. No need to learn its API, data schema, or required code hooks. In fact, you don’t even have to bundle an additional SDK or re-submit to the app store to get customer data into Leanplum, like the data used for emails and push notifications.

There are some features of Leanplum that do require you to bundle the SDK, like in-app messaging and A/B testing. It’s super simple to bundle the Leanplum SDK within the Segment SDK if that’s required and you won’t lose any ability to take advantage of Leanplum features in the process.
